Red Root Floaters (Phyllanthus fluitans): Care Guide
Red root floaters are beautiful floating plants known for their vibrant red roots and small, round leaves that turn reddish under ideal conditions. They are popular in aquascaping and freshwater aquariums for their aesthetic appeal and water-cleaning properties.
Care Requirements
1. Lighting
• High Lighting: Red root floaters require bright, intense light to develop their characteristic red hues. Use high-quality LED aquarium lights with a spectrum suitable for plants.
• Duration: Provide 8–10 hours of light daily. Too much light can encourage algae growth, while too little will prevent coloration and lead to poor growth.
2. Water Parameters
• Temperature: 70–82°F (21–28°C).
• pH: 6.0–7.5. Slightly acidic water is preferred.
• Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–15 dGH).
• Avoid strong water currents, as red root floaters thrive in calm water. If the flow is too strong, the roots and leaves may struggle to grow properly.
3. Nutrients
• Fertilization:
• Use liquid fertilizers containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients like iron. Iron supplements help maintain vibrant red coloration.
• CO₂: Not strictly required but can boost growth and enhance coloration in high-tech setups.
• Nutrient-Rich Water: Excess nitrates and phosphates from fish waste are beneficial, making this plant a great fit for tanks with moderate bioloads.
4. Pruning
• Red root floaters grow rapidly and can quickly cover the water surface, blocking light for other plants. Regularly thin them out to maintain balance and prevent overcrowding.
5. Placement
• Ensure the floaters have ample space on the water surface and aren’t overshadowed by other floating or tall plants.
• Avoid submerging them completely; they are true floating plants and will rot if forced underwater.
6. Humidity
• High humidity enhances the plant’s health and growth, making red root floaters ideal for tanks with lids or paludariums. Exposed plants in dry environments may experience drying or browning of leaves.
Common Issues and Solutions
1. Yellowing Leaves:
• Caused by nutrient deficiencies. Add liquid fertilizers, especially those containing nitrogen and iron.
2. Roots Losing Color:
• Insufficient light. Increase lighting intensity or duration.
3. Melting Leaves:
• Caused by sudden changes in water parameters or poor acclimation. Gradually introduce the plant to new environments.
Tank Compatibility
• Compatible with most fish and invertebrates, including bettas, guppies, and shrimp, which enjoy the shade and shelter the plant provides.
• Avoid with fish that disturb or eat plants, such as goldfish or large cichlids.
By providing sufficient light, nutrients, and proper care, red root floaters can thrive and become a stunning centerpiece for your aquarium. Their vibrant colors and dense roots also provide natural filtration and a comfortable habitat for your aquatic pets!
