How to set up and maintain your microworm culture:
Share
Materials You’ll Need:
1. A small, shallow plastic container with a lid (e.g., a deli container or Tupperware).
2. A breathable cover (plastic lid with small holes, or a cloth secured with a rubber band).
3. A substrate for the microworms:
• Oatmeal or instant mashed potatoes work well.
4. A small piece of baker’s yeast.
5. Your microworm starter culture.
Setting Up the Culture:
1. Prepare the Substrate:
• Mix oatmeal or instant mashed potatoes with water to create a thick paste. It should be moist but not overly wet.
• Spread the paste evenly on the bottom of your container, about ½–1 inch thick.
2. Add Yeast:
• Sprinkle a tiny pinch of baker’s yeast over the surface of the substrate. The yeast serves as food for the microworms.
3. Add the Starter Culture:
• Spread your microworm starter culture on top of the prepared substrate. Try to spread it out evenly.
4. Cover the Container:
• Place the breathable lid on the container. If you’re using a solid plastic lid, poke small holes for airflow to prevent the culture from becoming anaerobic.
5. Store in the Right Location:
• Keep the container in a warm, dark place (around 70–85°F or 21–29°C). Avoid direct sunlight and temperature extremes.
Harvesting Microworms:
• Ready in 2–3 Days:
Once the culture is established, you’ll see microworms climbing up the walls of the container.
• Use a cotton swab, a clean finger, or a small brush to gently collect them.
• Rinse them into your aquarium or feed them directly to your fish.
Maintaining the Culture:
1. Refresh the Culture Weekly:
• Once the substrate begins to smell sour, dries out, or the population declines, start a new culture using a small portion of the old one.
2. Avoid Overfeeding Yeast:
• Too much yeast can cause the culture to ferment and spoil.
3. Keep Multiple Cultures:
• Maintain at least two cultures at a time in case one fails.
With proper care, your microworm culture will provide a reliable, nutritious live food source for your fish!
